Get to Know Your Drink Better

Just getting into the world of wine and liquor? You’re bound to come across some terms that sound a bit mysterious at first. Don’t worry—once you understand the basics, picking out the right bottle becomes a whole lot easier. Here’s a quick guide to some of the most commonly used liquor and wine terms, so you can shop and sip with confidence.

Acidity
This describes the crisp, tangy, or zesty character of a drink. Think of the refreshing pop you get from lemonade—that’s acidity at work. Wines (especially whites) with higher acidity tend to feel lighter and more vibrant. It also makes them more refreshing and food-friendly.

Body
"Body" refers to the weight and texture of the liquor in your mouth. A drink can be light, medium, or full-bodied—kind of like comparing skim milk to whole milk. Generally, the higher the alcohol content, the heavier or fuller-bodied the wine will feel.

  • Light-bodied: Under 12.5% alcohol

  • Medium-bodied: 12.5% to 13.5%

  • Full-bodied: Above 13.5%

Bouquet
This is the aroma that develops as wine ages—also known as the "nose." These scents can be surprisingly complex and are different from the fresh fruit aromas found in young wines. A wine's bouquet can carry notes of spice, leather, earth, and more.

Finish
The finish is the flavor that lingers after you’ve taken a sip. A wine with a long finish allows you to savor its taste even after swallowing, while a short finish fades quickly. The longer the finish, the more refined and satisfying the wine usually feels.

Tannin
Tannins are naturally occurring compounds found in grape skins, seeds, and stems—especially in red wines. They add structure, a bit of bitterness, and can make your mouth feel dry. Wines high in tannin are great for aging and pair well with rich, fatty foods.
